Module 2 - Christian Theology and Doctrine
Dive into your beliefs and how they align with, or challenge, different Christian teachings.
This module delves into the rich and diverse landscape of Christian theology and doctrine. At its core, theology is the study of God and His relationship with the world, while doctrine refers to the teachings and beliefs actually held. Although Christianity is a faith shared by more than two billion people, it encompasses a wide range of theological and doctrinal beliefs. For example, identifying as a Christian typically implies belief in Jesus and a commitment to following him in some capacity. However, many people have different interpretations of who Jesus is (God, a created being who became divine, a good moral teacher) and what following him entails.
Consider some of the following questions:
What does it mean to call Jesus the Son of God?
Should the Bible be interpreted literally, metaphorically, or through its historical and cultural context?
Is salvation a single moment, something that you can lose, or something else altogether?
What role does the church play in the life of a believer?
Do all Christians share the same ultimate destination, or do different paths lead to different outcomes?
How do you understand the relationship between faith, works, and grace?
The answers to these questions vary widely depending on who you ask. You might not have fully developed answers to these questions—or even know where to start. That’s perfectly okay. The purpose of this Module is to help uncover the beliefs that you do have, and how they interact with each other on a broader scale. Your beliefs shape how you live and engage with the world—a theme explored further in Module 3 - Faith in Practice.
What you believe is only part of the picture
While this website’s primary goal is to help you identify what you believe, understanding why you hold these beliefs is just as important.
Your responses to the survey questions within this module are influenced by family upbringing, cultural context, denominational teachings, and personal experiences. At its core, Christianity is rooted in personal trust in Jesus—a decision only you can make for yourself. While pastors, churches, denominations, friends, and family can all offer valuable insights for what you believe and why you should believe it, your faith ultimately rests on convictions you have embraced and developed for yourself. No one can force you to believe anything—that's your choice, and a very important one. Consequently, this website works best by responding to survey questions with what you believe, not what you think you "should" believe or what the "right answer" is.
